Bayport Mexico improves VM backup performance by 2x with Vinchin Backup & Recovery

We have virtualized 85% of our entire environment using oVirt in recent years with the transformation of IT infrastructure worldwide. Business Challenge

Bayport is a global leader in at-source credit extension and serves more than 600,000 customers worldwide through more than 500 branches and supported by more than 7,500 employees. This time we provide backup services for Bayport Financial Services Mexico, which was established in 2014 and is Bayport’s second operation in Latin America, offering loans to civil servants using payroll deduction.

“Our virtual machines on oVirt are primarily used to store applications and files, including loan information of government agencies and retirees from IMSS and PEMEX, as well as production databases that allow us to run and provide loan services for government agencies. So we must ensure its correctness and safety at all times, that’s why data backup is extremely vital for us. But the backup made through legacy tool were unstable, as jobs would failed frequently when the network was congested. What’s worse, it takes nearly one to two hours every working day to configure the backups and troubleshoot all issues.” Says Joel.

In our conversation Joel wished to further speed up backup transmission and improve backup performance. “I understand data deduplication and compression are indispensable for reducing data size at the time of backup, but we couldn’t do it with our previous backup tool. So we decided to replace this data protection solution which has insufficient functionality with a new backup solution.” Says Joel.

Vinchin Solution

Bayport Mexico downloaded Vinchin Backup & Recovery directly from Vinchin website and installed it smoothly in their test environment following user guide within 5 minutes. “The installation process was really simple because we don’t need to install agent in each VM, which greatly reduces our workload for our more than 40 VMs on oVirt. Then we held a try mentality to evaluate Vinchin LAN-Free feature, the result was unexpected because our target VM data can be safely transferred from our production repository to backup repository without effecting our production system, it helps us greatly reduce network congestion and our Jobs so far have not failed. It’s great!” Says Joel.

As expected, deduplication and compression feature in Vinchin backup software works perfect on Bayport infrastructure. And we also recommend Bitdetector feature independently developed by Vinchin to Joel. “After listening to Vinchin’s introduction, we chose to enable Vinchin BitDetector in our backup jobs, what’s surprised us is that we found the total backup size indeed decrease and data transfer was also faster than before.
