From Guang’an to Guiyang, data great migration across 500 kilometers

We built a data center in Guang’an in the year 2017 and the second data center was built in Guiyang one year later in order to meet our growing demands and better optimize our resource allocation. We deployed VMware virtual infrastructure to better manage massive data in both data centers. However, we were facing a new challenge on data migration between the two data centers, we need a reliable and secure backup solution to help us solve this problem. After serious test, we decided to use Vinchin.

Business Challenge

China Water Environment (CWE) is a professional water environment platform under the National Development and Investment Group, it is also a leading integrated water environment investment operation service provider and leader in water environment management.

In China, CWE has successfully implemented 15 state-level demonstration projects with significant influence, accounting for the highest proportion of first and second batch of PPP demonstration projects of the Ministry of Finance. “Each project has a long implementation cycle and we need to record important data every day. The data in Guang’an data center has accumulated more than 20TB and is still growing. Since the two data centers were built in different time and locations, massive data and limited network bandwidth causes the data transmission from Guang’an to Guiyang may take too long time.” Said Mr Wu, the IT department supervisor at CWE.

Vinchin Solution

Since massive data in CWE’s VMware infrastructure needs to be migrated to offsite within one day and network bandwidth is a main problem, we directly backed up all VMs running in Guang’an data center without installing any agent using Vinchin Backup & Recovery and quickly restored the VMs to Guiyang data center, after verification, recovered data is consistent with data in Guang’an’s data center and running successfully.

“I really appreciate that vinchin has finished this difficult job for us in a short time, which has proved I’m not wrong on choosing vinchin backup & recovery to protect our data. In fact, at the beginning we were not sure if vinchin is the best backup solution, but that idea was gone after we installed it in a new VM and found this process only need 5 minutes, and we could backup unlimited VMs without installing agent in every VM, that saved us much time to do other jobs.
